The origin of CEFITEC dates back to the 1960s succeeding installed capabilities and facilities at former Nuclear Energy Studies Commission (CEEN), the Mass Spectrometry and Molecular Physics Calouste Gulbenkian Laboratory, the Molecular Physics Centre (CFM) from the National Institute for Scientific Research (INIC) and later from the National Body for Scientific and Technological Research (JNICT), from Lisbon Universities and from the Technical University of Lisbon.
Since its formal and legal establishment in 1994 at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, CEFITEC has been electing the following Heads of Research (or Directors of Research):

Os primórdios do CEFITEC remontam à década de 1960, passando pela antiga Comissão de Estudos de Energia Nuclear (CEEN.), Laboratório Calouste Gulbenkian de Espectrometria de Massa e Física Molecular, Centro de Física Molecular (CFM) do Complexo Interdisciplinar do Instituto Nacional de Investigação Científica (INIC), da Junta Nacional de Investigação Científica e Tecnológica (JNICT), das Universidades de Lisboa e da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.
